Roasted red bell peppers and a red dress.

Roasted bell peppers are really easy to make and require little to no effort. Here is how I do it-

How to roast red bell peppers at homeRoasted Red Bell Pepper Recipe-

Ingredients-

  1. Red Bell Peppers
  2. Pinch of salt
  3. Olive Oil
  4. Fresh oregano

Recipe Directions-

  • Wash and thoroughly clean the roasted bell peppers.
  • Dry the bell peppers well and then make a vertical slit. The slit allows the gases and the fluid to escape while the peppers roast.
  • Line the bell peppers on a baking sheet and put them in an oven which has been pre-heated to 375 degrees for about an hour. The peppers need to be turned every 15 minutes so that they roast evenly.
  • Prepare an ice bath-I dunk the peppers as soon as I take them out of the oven- the faster you dunk them the easier they are to peel.

Fluted Cap Sleeve Dress from Ann Taylor

I recently picked up the Fluted Cap Sleeve Dress from Ann Taylor. In person the dress is a lot redder than it appears online.I am generally a tad apprehensive when it comes to wearing bright red but there was something about this dress that I really liked. I don’t have anything similar to this dress in my closet and its a fun pop of color to my wardrobe which has a lot of neutrals. Here are a few ideas on how to wear this dress multiple ways-

As a skirt

I often wear my dresses as skirts-this allows me to dress up or dress down my outfit depending on the occasion.

Classic Additions To A Wardrobe-Sequined Blouse and Shoes.

Given that both my parents are extremely tall (by Indian standards) – dad’s 6’2″ and mum is 5’9″, the chances of me being tall were pretty likely. Sans heels, I am 5’10″ . Considering that the average Indian male stand at 5’5″ (Yes, I did look this up on wikipedia…lol) I grew up feeling like a giraffe and almost never wore heels until I moved to America(The average American male is 5’10″…wikipedia again).Since my move I have been indulging in my love for heels.I recently picked up this pair from Lord and Taylor.I love the classic cut of the shoe and the half bow adds a fun element.

Quick Review-The shoe has a very sturdy heel which makes it very comfortable to wear to work. While the heel height isn’t too crazy, I wouldn’t recommend wearing them for a solid 8 hours. When I get to work, if I am at my desk I generally switch to the ballet flats (I keep a extra pair at my office), right before I head to a meeting or to lunch I slip the heels back on.

I recently placed an online order for a few things at Ann Taylor. One of the items I ordered was the Snowfall Silk Blouse. While I really like the shirt the sequins make it a little hard to incorporate it into outfits. A simple trick to help balance out the sequins is pairing them with an extremely neutral outfit. When I wore this to shirt to dinner last weekend I paired it with basic black jeans, casual flats and a red belt.I kept the accessories small-simple stud earrings and a silver watch.

Quick Review-The shirt fits true to size and I purchased a medium. The sequins can be a little itchy because of which I like to wear a slip underneath, other than that I really like the shirt.

Lancome GÉNIFIQUE Youth Activating Concentrate Review

The Packaging

The glass bottle though pretty to look at, is quite heavy.I have the 0.67 oz bottle (which is the smallest size) and it has a definite weight to it.It looks pretty sitting on my vanity but is not the most travel friendly item cause its made of glass and its can break.

The Product:GÉNIFIQUE Youth Activating Concentrate

Lancome claims that using Genifique infuses the skin with life, giving it the lit from within glow-I didn’t observe those results. It definitely left my skin feeling hydrated and soft but I didn’t see any glow.

It is quite  a heavy formula and I dont need to apply a moisturizer after using this.Since this is not a product I use daily I have the smaller size- for those people who would use this daily the larger 1.7 oz ($98) would be a more economical option.

Overall Thoughts

While I like the serum I think I am going to try something new once I am done with this bottle.

Stila New Releases

STILA PALette REview

I have Stila’s In the Light Eyeshadow Palette and I really like it.Its a good alternative to Urban Decay’s Naked Palette. The eyeshadows are soft, blend easily and have great color payoff.Stila recently launched two more eyeshadow palettes-In The Garden Eye Shadow Palette and The Moment Eye Shadow Palette. The bright colors in these palettes will be great for those who love to experiment with bold looks. What do you think of the palettes-is it worth the splurge?

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorite actresses-Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama are movies which I have re-watched multiple times and they still make me smile. She poses for the February Cover of Elle Magazine and glams up her signature sun-kissed california look.To read the interview at Elle-click here

Hunter Boots and Conversation.

Having a pair (or two) of wellies is a wardrobe essentials. They are prefect for rainy days when you want to head out but are not in the mood to get wet. For awhile now I have been debating about purchasing a pair of Hunter boots but  couldn’t make up my mind about which color should I go with. When these pink ones went on super clearance,  I took that as a sign and bit the bullet.

Outfit Idea-

With Jeans-You can pair hunter boots with skinny dark blue jeans and a simple shirt for casual but still pulled together outfit.Since my boots are pink  I would stick to a neutral colored shirt in grey, beige, navy, white or black.

With A Skirt-Pairing a skirt in white, cream or black with tights and a shirt on a rainy day makes for a feminine and weather appropriate outfit. To keep myself warm, I would add a basic khaki tench and some simple pearl stud earrings.

The Body Shop-Banana Shampoo and Conditioner

I recently picked up The Body Shop’s Banana Shampoo and Conditioner and after using it a couple of times have come to really like it. When I was in India, I never liked Body shop -I always thought their products smelt incredibly funny and weird.Over Christmas I received a Body Butter and Body Shop bath mitts (I liked the bath mitts so much that I picked up a couple as backups) as a gift and loved both the products- this has made me re-try Body Shop products.

Product Review

Both the shampoo and the conditioner are incredibly moisturizing-I have noticed that my hair is a lot less frizzy after using them. Also my hair breaks a lot less when I am shampooing with this shampoo which is great.

Photos-Review-Body Shop Banana Shampoo and Conditioner review

This is by far the most delicious smelling shampoo and conditioner, I have ever used-It smells so good that I almost want to eat it-mix a banana smoothie with some pineapple ice-cream and you sort of get this smell(Clearly I was hungry when I was writing this). Not to be a sucker for packaging but a yellow shampoo which smells like a banana-pineapple ice-cream smoothie at 6 am in the morning -Yes Please!!! Its the puuuuurrrrffffeect wake me up-What say?

Photos and review-Body Shop Banana Shampoo and Conditioner

The only negative I have to say about this product is that- you really need to work it through your hair before you get suds but it does lather up really well once you work it through your hair.

A sunday morning ritual and a recipe.

It’s taken me a long time to find the perfect calendar but the Erin Condren 2011-2012 life planner (favorite things) is something that has become an absolute must have for an organized week. One of my sunday rituals is planning out the coming week-from work meetings to grocery shopping lists to planning upcoming blog posts- everything is entered into this calendar.Erin Condren Planner (available here)

I generally catch up on my favorite shows over the weekend. There is something extremely relaxing about curling in with a plate of snacks and watching the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Its one of the simple weekend luxuries I really enjoy and look forward too.

Hummus Recipe

One of my favorite snacks is Hummus.I eat with everything-pita bread, tortilla chips,bruschetta-You name it I can probably eat it with hummus.Unlike most traditional recipes which call for a cup of oil, I only use 3 tbsp’s of olive oil-this helps keep the recipe relatively healthy and low in calories.

Ingredients

  • 1 can of chick peas
  • 1/4 of a red onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp of chili powder
  • Roasted cumin
  • 1/2 tsp of sugar
  • Salt to taste

Recipe Directions:

Grind the chick-peas,onion, and garlic till they form a thick paste.Add the chili powder, salt, sugar and roasted cumin seeds.Pulse again and then add 2 tbsp of Olive oil.

If unlike me you can resist digging into this dip for a couple of hours-it will taste even better, as waiting allows the flavors to marry and combine making the hummus even more yummy.

The weekend and a recipe.

Despite being just 4 days long, this week has been one of those blink and miss weeks where before I knew it the days had whizzed past at it was time Friday (not that I am complaining-I never complain about Fridays). At work we launched 3 major initiatives and I am responsible for one of them-I am looking forward to getting a better grasp on this project next week and hopefully knocking it out of the park in the coming months.

My plans for the weekend include some much needed R&R-I and a girlfriend caught up over a manicure and some Indian food this evening.Tomorrow I am going to try my hand at baking a mini apple pie.I am also planning on stopping by Ann Taylor to try some pieces from their Modern Art Collection.

I wanted to share with you one of my go-to recipes for a quick meal. Its perfect for a lazy weekend dinner with some pasta and salad.

Garlic Pops are quick, easy, and needs less than 10 minutes of prep time. You need 3 main ingredients (butter, garlic, frozen biscuits)-the rest of the recipe  is completely customizable.

Recipe Directions-

1.Grind Garlic and Cilantro with 1 tbsp of  EVOO.Add this mixture to 1 1/2 tbsp of melted butter till it forms a garlicy paste (garlic butter).

2.Since I was making this for me, I added a lot of Indian spices (red chilli powder, chat masala, cumin powder, salt and sugar) to the Garlic butter but if you don’t like the taste and heat of indian spices you can substitute them with dried chives, oregano, salt,a pinch of sugar and its tastes just as great.

3.Cut the biscuits into bite size pieces and dunk them into the garlic butter.Transfer the pieces to a baking sheet but leave some space in between the dough pieces so that as they bake they have space to rise and join together.

4.Bake in a warm oven at 350 F for about 10 minutes.They will come out warm, crisp and totally yummy.I generally pair them with pasta (See my recipe for that here.)

NARS Danmari All About Cheeks Palette

As I had mentioned here I had stopped by the mall for some much needed retail therapy-One of the thing that I have had on my wish list for awhile now is the NARS Danmari All About Cheeks Palette. This is a great palette to travel with-instead of carrying a separate blush, bronzer and highlighter you can just carry this one palette.

I really liked the exterior packaging of the palette -Its very sleek and minimalistic. The palette itself comes in a sleek black case with  a huge mirror inside.

The only downside to this palette is that it contains both Orgasm and Super Orgasm. Orgasm and Super Orgasm are pretty much the same shade-the only difference is that Super Orgasm has tons of glitter. If they had put another shade instead of Super Orgasm this palette would have been amazing.

Overall Thoughts-

I think its a great product and an really good buy if you travel a lot.As with all NARS products the rubbery packaging is really easy to get dirty but the pigmentation on these blushes is phenomenal.

Breakfast and a grocery shopping detour.

One of the things which I really like about my apartment is the large windows in the dining area, its my favorite nook to have my saturday morning breakfast. There is a round table strategically placed by the windows allowing me to take advantage of the mid morning warmth, while leisurely perusing the global happenings.

One of my favorite article from today’s WSJ was “Is Facebook ready for big time”.Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg is someone who I really admire and reading the article provided a interesting insight into the growth opportunities for Facebook.

My Breakfast

3 of your favorite fruits topped with thick, creamy Greek Yogurt. I generally add some granola for crunch but gave it a skip this morning.

During my weekly jaunt to pick up groceries I stopped by the drugstore and picked up the Clean and Clear Morning Surge.I have a Clarisonic mia and I like it a lot, but was in the mood to try something different.I picked up 3 packs of the Energizing cleansing pads as well.Rite Aid is has Clean and Clear products on sale right now.The Surge was $15.99 and a box of the Energizing pads was  $6.99.With the discount my total was about $30, but I will do a more detailed price comparison in my up coming review.

Online Window Shopping-

I really like Ann Taylor and Loft clothes and couldn’t help but do some online window shopping yesterday night.AT clothes are quality pieces which are made to last and are quite reasonably priced. Most of my work wardrobe is made up of pieces from Ann Taylor and Loft.I particularly like their button up shirt-they are crisp, beautifully fitted and are real wardrobe work horses. One shirt which caught my eye was this statement cuff blouse.

Clinique black honey review and weekend plans.

I have heard rave reviews about this signature Clinique product but have always been on the fence about buying it.With Clinique recently launching a whole range of lip wear modelled around the Black Honey lipstick called Almost Lipstick, I decided to take the plunge and purchase the Black Honey lipstick. When I first saw this shade my initial reaction thought was that I can never wear this color, this is way to dark, but I was wrong. This lipstick gives the nicest pink glow-its almost like your-lips-but-a-better-redder-version of them.In addition the lipstick is paraben free which is always a plus in my eyes.

The lipstick goes on really sheer and is extremely moisturizing. The black color is just scary in the tube. Here is proof-this is a very heavy swatch(I went back and forth at-least 4 times), if you apply just a coat or two it isn’t even this dark

Weekend Plans.

Here in the States the long Martin Luther King day weekend is around the corner-bringing with it the opportunity for me to take charge and get a kick start on a few projects that I have had on hold for awhile.Despite the productive nature of this weekend I have planned a couple of leisure filled hours to catch up on some reading and baking. The cold wave which has recently hit the north-east is making its presence felt even to those of us who live in the South and as a result I am planning on staying close to home all weekend but nevertheless am excited about the extra day off.

I hope you are doing well and are looking forward to your weekend!

The Body Shop-Bath Mitts

I have always been pretty regular with exfoliating my body. I generally exfoliate my entire body on the weekends and I love how smooth and soft the skin feels after exfoliating.I have used everything from homemade bath salts mixtures to sponges to scrubs, but one of my favorite products are these bath mitts. They are easy to use, they create no mess and they are pretty economical.

I have tried the Salux Japanese Beauty Cloths, they are good but these mitts are more convenient and do the same job. The Salux cloths are more abrasive and are better for areas like elbows, hips and back . These bath mitts are softer and can be used on arms, legs and chest area. I generally stock up on these during the body shop sales and picked up 5 of these last weekend.

The Zars- body shop bath mitts- weekly exfoliation -beauty routine

I use them in two different ways-for dry brushing and for weekly exfoliating sessions. I am not very regular with dry brushing but when I do, do dry brushing these work okay-I dont thing they are meant for dry brushing your body. For weekly exfoliating sessions they work wonderfully. I get into the shower and wet the sponge and start from my feet and go all the way to my chest. i use broad sweeping motions to get rid of dead skin and exfoliate my entire body.

The Zars- body shop bath mitts- weekly exfoliation -beauty routine

Their are two main reasons I think they are a better option to scrubs -

1.They are gloves-unlike scrubs which sort of melt under the shower,  you can get a grip on your skin with these-which in turn lets you have a better buffing action.

2.The gloves have thin ridges running though out  which helps with exfoliation.

Benefit Cosmetics-High Beam

High beam is my all time favorite highlighter. Its a cream formula instead of a powder one and has a slightly pink tinge.Cause its a cream product its very easy to blend it into your skin and it gives an almost candle lit glow. While  $26 for a small 13 ml bottle is a pricey, a bottle of  High Beam literally lasts forever and glow from High beam is unlike any other highlighter I have ever seen.

Despite being a cream product it doesn’t make your face look oily, but I use  a pretty light hand during the summer cause I have oily combination skin, during the winter I can afford to be more generous with the application.

Like other Benefit tints High beam also has a nail polish applicator-for hygienic purposes I take some on my finger and then blend it out, rather than directly applying High beam onto my face.Unlike Benetint which dries almost instantly - High beam is creamier allowing you a longer time frame to blend the product before it dries out.

52 Weeks of Resolutions-Week 2

This week is more of a detox than a resolution. I am going to give up on chocolate and ice-cream for 1 month.I have started to crave something sweet everyday, call it post holiday hangover but I hate being dependent on anything. So starting tonight-going through till 15th February, which is my parents wedding anniversary,I am not going to eat any chocolate or ice-cream.

The glitter particles thought tiny, can definitely be felt on the lips-I didn’t mind that but for those who are very sensitive this might be an issue. The particles are not chunky enough to be gritty but are big enough that you can feel them on your lips.

Holiday Season Favorites

Its amazing how fast the holiday spirit dissipates-The gradual slowing down which invariably occurs at work after thanksgiving to accomodate the holiday season is brushed off, projects are launched, new resolutions are formed and its time to start looking forward to spring. But before I completely let go of the holiday spirit, I wanted to feature a few thing that made my holiday season easy.

1.LBD:

Every year during the holiday season I pick up a couple of dresses to get me through, this year my favorite find was this Ann Taylor Dress.I paired it with tights, black kitten heels and a clutch-I kept the jewelry minimal cause of the heavy sequin work. This was a absolute winner for me this season.

Available at-Ann Taylor

I got so much wear out of this dress that it was well worth the price, if you are looking for an evening LBD this is perfect. My local Ann Taylor store 2 weeks back had it for 50% off-$119 (at that price its a steal). You might want to check if they have further reduced the price. Its sold out online. The back of the dress does not have sequins which I actually like, it reduces the chances of snagging the dress when you sit down.

2.The perfect Gloss-YSL’s Golden Gloss in Golden Peony:

Available here-Sephora ($30).

Review of the gloss with more pictures available Here

This was my go to gloss during the holiday’s-its a very soft pink with golden glitter in it.I dont wear lipstick and would wear this alone. You can feel the glitter on your lips, its mildly chunky but it didn’t bother me.I liked this so much that I recently purchased a new one.

3.Holiday Scents:

Bath and Body Works-Large 14.5 oz Candle ($19.50) Small 1.6 oz Candles ($3.50)

I love Slatkin & Co Candles by Bath and Body works.I generally buy the small size and then pick back ups of the scents I like in the large tumbler sizes. This year my favourite scents were Merry Mistletoe and ‘Tis the season

4.The perfect bag for shopping:Lands End Canvas Totes

There is defiantly a place for a great leather bag in my closet but during the holiday season when I head to the mall, I am picking up gifts for my friends, colleagues and occasionally even for myself (Ok more than occasionally-quite often in fact, but ….).By the time I am done, I have more bags than I know what to do with-Having a large tote allows me to dump all my things into one bag and go.I use this bag for everything from grocery shopping to a picnic carry all bag.

Available at-Lands End (30)

A interesting fact about Lands End totes are- they were on Oprah’s Favorite list for summer 2006.

I would love to hear what your holiday favorites were?

Pea Soup.

My favorite meal during winter is pea soup with tortilla chips and shredded mozzarella. Its really simple to make and takes about 10 minutes from the time you enter the kitchen to the time you bite into the first pea soup dunked chip.A cozy throw and great book and some pea soup are the perfect companions to wile away a rainy winter afternoon-just like I did today.

The ingredients are pretty simple and are as follows

  • 2 large cups of boiled Peas
  • 1 large Red Onion
  • 3 green Chillies
  • 12 cloves of Garlic
  • 1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 tbsp Cumin Seeds
  • 2 pinches of Turmeric Powder
  • A pinch of Sugar
  • 1 tsp of Chili Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Cilantro

In a pan heat the EVOO and add the cumin seeds.Turn the heat on low and add garlic-sprinkle a pinch of sugar on top and cook for about 3 minutes.

Add turmeric powder, chili powder and onions.Sprinkle salt on top to prevent the onions from browning, cook for about 5 minutes on medium heat or till onions are soft and cooked all the way through then add peas.

Take the pan off of the heat and add cilantro and mix throughly.Blend the mixture into a puree.I like my soup to be a little runny, so I added about 1 and a half cup of water.

Add to a bowl and serve-I eat my pea soup with cheese, chili flakes, tortilla chips and a good romance novel-Trust me when I say its food for the soul.

Hina Rabbani’s Style Mantra.

Working in America has made me have new found respect for women who ascend the upper echelons of success, whether the success is a corporate one or a political win, these women’s achivements inspire me to work harder, be better, in a way almost REMIND ME TO GIVE MY 100%.

The women who really inspire me are Kalpana Chawla (NASA astronaut), Sheryl Sandberg (COO Facebook), Indra Nooyi (CEO Pepsi), Julia Gillard (The Australian President),Arianna Huffington(Founder Huffington Post), Jin Sook Chang (Forever 21 founder-I might not like Forever 21 but I have great respect for this immigrant American Business women) .The list is pretty much endless but recently I have added a new name to it-Hina Rabbani, though time will tell if she can make strong policy decision for now here is a fun way to get her look which is both conservative yet stylish.

52 Weeks of Resolutions-Week 1

This year I have decided to do something different, instead of making lots of new year resolutions I am starting a 52 week challenge, each week of the year I am going to try an incorporate one healthy habit into my daily routine.I am hoping that by taking baby steps each week and focusing on just one healthy habit I will be able to make life style changes instead of just new year resolutions which somehow always seem to slip up mid-year.

This week I am going to start showering as soon as I get up.I pretty good about doing this on the weekday’s as I have to get ready for work but on week ends I keep pushing this and as a result feel very lazy and am not very productive.

Hello Readers!

Welcome to Zars! Your first question probably is, “What is a Zars?” and my answer to that is a slightly convoluted one- going through medical school I learned the importance of reports-whether they were lab results or scan’s, reports helped validate a diagnoses, they helped narrow down the probable possibilities of what could be wrong, in a way reports are one of the corner stones of medicine today. Z to A reports or Zars simply stands for a comprehensive and a detailed look into the things I find fascinating and appealing.

Going through medical school one of my favorite ways of remembering things was via pictures.Whether it was remembering muscle attachment for a particular bone or histology slides -I would take a picture and make labels and annotation around it,adding pneumonic’s with different colors of highlighters and pens till it almost looked like a poster-My best friend always teased me that my textbooks resembled a child’s drawing book, but that was one of the best ways I could remember the bazillion facts that you need to in Med school. I am taking my same love for visualization and incorporating it into Zars. The artsy look that I liked my Anatomy Chaurasia Textbook to have is something that I have tried to re-create at Zars.To me Zars is a place where I can capture snippets of my life and share them with you.Its my internet home.

About Me-

I was raised in Mumbai, India and attended school and college there. After college I joined Med School and then moved to the United Stated fours years ago for my Masters. Moving to a new country was both challenging and exhilarating in equal parts. I had never stayed away from home and living on my own for the very first time was a great life lesson.
